Chiesa and Scuola Grande di San Rocco, San Polo, Venice

This is the absolute must-visit for any fan of Tintoretto (or fine art in general). The church itself is not particularly appealing although it boasts an urn with the remains of St Roch and several outstanding pieces by Tintoretto and one by Sebastiano Ricci. The Scuola, on the other hand, is absolutely amazing. I have now visited it twice and will certainly go there again the next time I am in Venice. The two floors are profusely decorated with paintings by Tintoretto on biblical subjects. The impact is so overwhelming that one may be forgiven for failing to notice the great decor and the superb wood carvings in the stalls lining the walls. Photography is not allowed (and the personnel is unusually vigilant) but there is a very good guidebook available for purchase at the giftshop.
