Madonna dell'Orto, Cannaregio, Venice
Although many people find the delicate gothic facade to be among the prettiest in Venice, the true attraction of this edifice is that it was Tintoretto's parish church, and as such contains not only his (and his father's, as well as his son's) grave but also boasts a plethora of some stunning works by the master. The interior has a nave and two aisles and is actually sparsely decorated save for the paintings. Not to be missed are 'The Presentation of the Virgin to the Temple' as well as the copious adornements of the chancel, among which his depictions of the Virtues rank among the best, and the monumental paintings with the 'Worship of the Golden Calf' and 'The Last Judgment' that grace both sides of the apse. There are also several chapels on the (liturgical) north side and a small museum of sacred art. Photography is not allowed, and there is no guidebook although there is a laminated guide that you must return upon leaving.
