Opiate (1992, Volcano)
One of the most incredible debut EPs ever, "Opiate" showcases Tool in a way that none of
their subsequent albums did (the two up to 1999, that is). It is much heavier and more
aggressive that the follow-ups, and although the band is still as uncompromising and
tongue-in-cheek as ever, this album is the pinnacle they have yet to surpass. With only
7 songs (6 listed and one hidden track), and clocking in at less than 30 minutes, "Opiate"
still delivers a brutal punch with of pure energy and stellar production. The style is modern,
very heavy (yet possibly not metal) with Maynard James Keenan careening between whispers and
screaming his lungs off. Don't take the lyrics too seriously though, especially if you are
easily offended. Although some lump Tool in with the likes of Korn and other uninspired
"metal" acts, this band has definitely nothing to do with those.
Verdict: Nothing quite like it, crank up the volume for this one!
