Evillot (1999, North Wind)

Lineup: Michela D'Orlando (vocals), Marco Cecconi (guitars), Daniele Viola (bass), Mauro Cantarella (guitars), Roberto Dussi (drums), Claudio Berra (keyboards)

Style: Power metal with female vocals

Pretty fast and somewhat standard power metal, with fantasy lyrics about swords, epic battles, and what have you. Unlike many of the vocalists in this genre, this one doesn't just sound like a girl, she is a girl. Don't make no mistake, she has a powerful voice which manages to drown the music despite the frenetic double pedal drumming. Although there isn't a lot of imagination in the musical department (and the poetry ain't no Shakespeare), the band packs a punch and with the album clocking in at 52 minutes, there's plenty of music and energy to wake up even the drowsiest among us. The cover is done by Luis Royo (if you have to ask who he is, you haven't been paying attention) and is predictably good. The production is clear, although a bit flat.

Verdict: a decent album for starving power-metal fans, the female vocals are the greatest asset.
