Fallen Angel's Symphony (1999, Cacophonous)

Lineup: Chris Anderle (vocals, lyrics), Christoph Mertes (drums), Jones (bass), Marc Barbian (guitar), Patrick Meyer (guitar), Stefan Müller (keyboards), Cynthia Follmann (alto), "Evil Erna" Siikavrita (soprano)

Sounding like a cross between Gehenna and The Sisters of Mercy, this black metal band creates gloomy landscapes where grim whispers intertwine with melodic female vocals. Melodic and epic doom/black with excellent arrangements and a lot of keyboards and superb production. The song 'Death in Desire's Masquerade' was enough to pique my attention and resulted in me buying the CD, which I don't regret in the tiniest. Although many bands these days feel obliged to feature a female vocalist, only few do with unqualified success. Ancient Ceremony is one of them. I just wish they'd credit her with a picture! Also, the lyrics are pretty decent for a change. Overall, a recommended album with absolutely cool artwork. Be sure to check out "Symphoni Satani" which reminds me of the timeless Jerry Goldsmith score to "The Omen."
